Imagery

What scenes, moments, descriptive passages, phrases, or words stand out in your reading of the story?

The scene when they both falling in love together is stand out. I didn't expected the they both are falling in love because at first they fight like an enemy.

Did a particular image make you feel happy, or frightened, or disturbed, or angry? Why?

It feel a little bit confused and disturbed because it is not very clear how they both falling in love together. It is also sad that she forgot her ex husband so fast and have on new husband.

Which of your five senses did this image appeal to? What do you associate with this image, and why? What do you think the author wants you to feel about a certain image?

The image appeal to me the sense of sight. I didn't see this scene but i imagine it by reading the book. I think the narrator would make me feel more confused.

How do you think your reactions to the imagery in the story contribute to the overall meaning of the story?

I think my reaction to the imagery in the story change the meaning of the story to me. First I thought that Popova is pitiful but then when she felt in love with another guy I felt sorry for her ex husband instead.

Point of View

What point of view does the story use? Is the story told from a first-person perspective, in which the narrator is one of the characters in the story, and refers to himself or herself as "I"? Or is the story told from a third-person perspective, in which the narrator is not one of the characters in the story or may not participate in the events of the story?

It is third-person perspective. The narrator is not one of the characters in the story. The narrator tells the story about the other person.

What are the advantages of the chosen point of view? Does it furnish any clues as to the purpose of the story?

There won't know the truth because the narrator is not the person who is the main character.

Is the narrator reliable or unreliable? Does he/she have a limited knowledge or understanding of characters and events in the story? Does the narrator know almost everything about one character or every character, including inner thoughts?

The narrator is unreliable because the narrator doesn't know the story because the narrator doesn't involve in the story. The narrator has limited knowledge and understanding of characters and events in the story.
The narrator doesn't know everything about characters and inner thoughts because the narrator write the book with the third point of view.

Does the author use point of view primarily to reveal or conceal? Does he ever unfairly withhold important information known to the focal character?

The author uses the point of view to conceal to reveal in the best of times. The author did not withhold any important information that the reader needs to know.

Character

Who is/are the main characters in the story? What does the main character look life?

Elena Ivanovna Popova is one of the main character in this story. She is a widow. Her husband died seven months age, but she is still in mourning. She is a landowning little widow, with dimples on her cheeks. Grigory Stepanovitch Smirnov is a middle-aged landowner. He is trying to get the money that Popova's husband have borrowed before he died. He looks strong and angry so easily. He has a very powerful character. Luka, Popova's aged footman.

Describe the main character's situation. Where does he/she live? Does he/she live alone or with others? What does the main character do for a living, or is he/she dependent on others for support?

Popova live in a house which is not a town or a village. It is a house in the middle of the forest where nobody can easily find it. She lives with Luka, Popova's aged footman.  But she's still missed her husband that have already passed away. She's mourning since her husband is dead. She doesn't go outside because she's sad and in a sorrow. She is a landowning. She doesn't want to go anywhere because she love her husband much more than any other things. But, there's a guy named Smirnov. Her husband have borrowed him the money before he is dead. So Smirnov is searching for him but found his wife instead so he decided to ask for his money. Later on they both are falling in love together.

What are some of the chief characteristics (personality traits) of the character? Note the degree of complexity of his/her behavior, thought, and feelings; their appearances, their habits, mannerisms, speech, attitudes and values. What is the main character's attitude towards his/her life? Is he/she happy or sad, content or discontented? Why?

Popova has a cute character and has a stronghead. She talks straight to everyone. She is not a weak woman. She believes that her husband is protecting her everyday. She is kind and be nice to everyone that is nice to her. But she doesn't do it to Smirnov. Somirnov has a strong feelings and character. He wants his money back and tried to talk rudely to scared Popova. But it doesn't scared Popova because Popova is a stong woman and doesn't want any unfair thing. Popova doesn't want to have a new husband because she loved her husband so much. But later on she fell in love with Smirnov and Smirnov is falling in love too.

What sort of conflict is the character facing? How is this conflict revealed? Is it resolved? If so, how?

The conflict in the story is the trouble that Popova's husband made it before his death. He have borrowed the money from Smirnov who is here to take the money from Popova's house which is her husband's house. It is revealed when Smirnov come into the house and trying to force Popova to give him the money that her husband have borrowed. It is resolved because they are falling in love together.

Is any character a developing character? If so, is his change a large or a small one? Is it a plausible change for him? Is he sufficiently motivated? Is the change given sufficient time?

They both developoing their character because at first they are fighting and talking rudely to each othre real bad. But lastly, they both are falling in love together. It is a large one because I can't believe it that it will end this way. It is plausible because love happened anywhere any time. It is sufficient motivated and sufficient time.

The coincidence is the stange love appear to both Smirnov and Popova. They are arguing at first but late Smirnov started to love Popova by the way she acts toward him. Theses occurrences used to resolved the story because they became husband and wife later on, this is how they improved themselves.
